The dogs that belong to the hound group are quite diverse in look and stature. They all nevertheless share the same strong instinct for hunting prey. 
Different breeds of hounds achieve this goal by various means. Some hounds rely on their acute sense of smell or sight. Others have amazing endurance, pursuing their quarry until their target is exhausted.
Although most hounds are standoffish with strangers they do not make good watchdogs. 
They do however make wonderful devoted pets.
